If a state has ratified the optional protocol to CEDAW the Committee is authorised to undertake investigations in response to “reliable information” which indicates “grave or systematic violations” of rights contained within the Convention in the territory of that state (OP article 8). Information may be submitted (anonymously if necessary) to CEDAW by individuals or groups, stating that it is submitted for the purposes of triggering an inquiry. Inquiry process may, with the consent of relevant State parties, involve a country visit. Having made its inquiry the Committee then invites the relevant State(s) to give details of measures taken in response to the inquiry. It should be noted that inquiries cannot yield recommendations for individual remedies.
